On September 17th, 1968, Robert Miller and his Ecuadorian wife María Clara “Chantal”
gave birth to a second daughter, Marie-Chantal Claire, in London,
England. The couple raised her in Hong Kong, China where she attended
The Peak School until the age of 9. After that, she attended Institut Le
Rosey, a school in Gstaad, Switzerland. (Some notable [royal] alumni
include King Albert II of Belgium, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, and
Mohammad Rezā Shāh Pahlavī, just to name a few.) They lived there for
five years before her parents bought a home in Paris. They remained
there until Pia, Marie-Chantal’s oldest sister, graduated. Pia went to
Barnard College in New York City, and Marie-Chantal joined her. There
she met famed artist Andy Warhol. Marie-Chantal worked for Andy for a
year before she “took some time off to figure out what she wanted to do.”
In 1992, Stavros Niarchos threw his son Philip a 40th
birthday party in New Orleans. Alecko Papamarkou, a friend of the
Millers and a New York investment banker whose father had been an aide
to King Paul, Pavlos’s grandfather, set Pavlos and Marie-Chantal on a
blind date.
Three years later, Pavlos proposed to Marie-Chantal while on holiday in Switzerland, presenting her with an heirloom cabochon sapphire ring with a heart-shaped diamond on the side.
She converted from Catholicism to Greek Orthodoxy in a private ceremony
at St. Paul’s Chapel in New York. They married on July 1st, 1995, and she became Her Royal Highness The Crown Princess of Greece, Princess of Denmark. Her gown was designed by Valentino Garavani. The wedding was planned by Robert Isabell and Lady Elizabeth Anson.
Marie-Chantal is the owner of many Marie-Chantal stores, boutiques and concessions around the world: two in London, one in Waikiki, retail concessions in Harrods, Le bon marché in Paris, Saks Fifth Avenue and Barney’s in New York. There are also boutiques in 18 different countries. Marie-Chantal is perhaps best known for the bestselling angel onesie.
Marie-Chantal is also a member of several organizations and institutions: trustee of the Royal Academy of Arts
and a board director of DFS Holdings, her father’s company - a member
of the Board New York School of American Ballet, a member of the Board
of the Animal Medical Centre, a founding member of the Board of Venetian
Heritage and Co-chair of World in Harmony.
